How fast can I get the results from a COVID-19 test?

The most common way to receive the results of a Covid test in a timely manner is by using a rapid antigen test. A rapid antigen test usually gives results within 15 to 30 minutes. A rapid antigen test is a denser testing agent used, and because of the dense material, it is able to sense Covid particle materials.

It involves a buffer solution that comes with the testing solution, and this buffer solution is mixed in with the testing swab, and then gets picked up with a pipette, and then placed onto the testing unit. The testing unit also picks up any Covid particles, and if there are Covid particles within the mixed solution, the test will come back positive. These tests are very handy to have at home, as it is a quick step to prevent the spread of Covid if you feel unwell.

How accurate are rapid COVID-19 tests?

Rapid antigen tests are known to be extremely accurate. The misconception of rapid tests not being accurate has to do with the type of material the rapid tests are made of. PCR (also known as polymerase chain reaction) tests use a very sensitive material that picks up a very small amount of Covid particles within the nasal or oral cavity. Because of the sensitivity, it requires delicate testing to determine if it is positive or negative. A Rapid antigen test is a lot more dense material and is used to detect a large amount of Covid particles in a person’s nasal or oral cavity. Due to the denser material, it requires less delicate testing to determine if it is positive or negative.

For people who recently have been in contact with a person that tested positive, the rapid test won’t be able to detect any Covid particles due to the fact that the virus has not had a lot of time to replicate to where there would be enough particles for the test to recognize it. It is recommended when using a rapid test to wait 2 or 3 days before testing if you are having symptoms to receive the most accurate results.

What to do if you test positive on a rapid test for COVID-19?

If you have recently tested positive for Covid, you need to isolate based on your state guidelines. It is recommended that if you test positive, you should isolate for 5 days after your positive test. If you live in a home with other people and they test positive after you, your 5 days start all over again.

It is recommended that you do not go into any public institution like a grocery store, gas station, restaurant, etc. It is also recommended to notify any person you have been in contact with that you have tested positive. You are considered contagious 2 days (or 48 hours) before symptoms start, so any contact you have had within the 2-day period before you had symptoms.

Where can I get tested for COVID-19 with same-day results?

There are many places that offer same-day Covid test results. One place that is known to give same-day results is local pharmacies. Another place that is known to give same-day tests is hospitals, due to the fact that they are the most common place for people to go who think they may have Covid.
